Mercedes-AMG's New 646-Horsepower Mythos Coupe Is Limited to Just 30 Cars

Mercedes-AMG has pulled the wraps off its latest halo car, and this one was never meant to be common. Unveiled on September 10, the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is the second vehicle to wear the Mythos badge -- AMG's designation for the most extreme, most limited cars it builds -- and only 30 examples will exist worldwide.

The number in the name is the giveaway. Under the hood sits a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft, tuned to 637 horsepower (646 PS in the metric measure AMG uses for the name) and 627 lb-ft of torque. AMG quotes 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, 0-200 km/h in 11.4 seconds, and a top speed of 311 km/h -- numbers that put it ahead of the standard CLE 53 it's based on, and squarely in supercar territory.

A Coupe Built to Out-Handle Its Own Family

What makes the CLE 646 more interesting than a simple power bump is what AMG took away. The standard CLE 53 sends power to all four wheels; the 646 is rear-wheel drive only, with an electronically controlled limited-slip differential doing the work a transfer case would otherwise handle. That's a deliberate step back toward a purer, more old-school kind of performance car, and it says something about who AMG expects to buy this: drivers who want to feel the rear axle working, not just see a faster number on a spec sheet.

The weight side of the ledger matters just as much. Carbon fiber body panels, polycarbonate rear windows, and a lighter 12-volt starter battery combine to shed roughly 170 kg versus the CLE 53. A reworked front splitter, an enlarged rear diffuser, and a fixed rear wing with an adjustable center section generate up to 250 kg of downforce at top speed -- aero hardware that belongs on a track car, not a Mercedes coupe, which is rather the point of putting "Spezialanfertigung" (special build) in the name.

What a 30-Car Run Means for Dubai's Collector Market

Cars built in runs this small rarely go through a conventional showroom process, and the ones that reach the GCC almost never sit on a dealer floor for long. Allocations for Mythos-series and similarly limited AMG, Rolls-Royce, and Ferrari builds tend to be decided long before a car is publicly revealed, which means the real market for something like the CLE 646 plays out afterward -- among owners looking to sell, and buyers who missed the original allocation and are willing to pay a premium to get one anyway.
